Proton announced the launch of an Apple TV app for its virtual private network. The new app, which was “one of the most requested features from our community,” according to a company blog post, is available to download from the App Store on any Apple TV. It will allow customers with a paid ProtonVPN plan to stream their media content from any location to Apple’s set-top box.
ProtonVPN was our favorite when we reviewed it in 2023, and it’s still our top pick for a virtual private network this year. The service offers great features for security, privacy, and usability. Our only real complaint was that the free tier has a lot of limitations. But if you’re interested in the company’s platform, Proton is currently running an Early Black Friday deal where you can get one- or two-year plans at a steep discount.
With TikTok just days away from being banned in the US, users of the app are pushing some previously lesser-known apps to the top of Apple and Google’s stores. The app that has benefited the most so far is a Chinese social media app called “RedNote” or Xiaohongshu, which translates to “little red book.”
The TikTok-like app for shortform videos is currently the number one app in Apple’s App Store and ranked 34th in Google’s Play Store. RedNote is gaining popularity as many TikTok creators have started posting about their experiences trying out the Chinese app. Meanwhile, on RedNote, many creators have shared videos about welcoming “TikTok refugees” to the service.
The app is set up similarly to TikTok, with the ability to vertically scroll a feed of shortform videos based on what interests you. Most of the app’s interface is in Chinese, so navigating can be a little confusing, although there are some helpful videos on TikTok that explain how to change the app’s language to English.
